Nutrition and PCOS
Because insulin resistance is common in women with PCOS, nutrition therapy is a crucial component of treatment in order to help prevent diabetes and heart disease. In general, a diet that is low in saturated fat and carbohydrates is recommended. Lean protein, unsaturated fats, particularly omega 3 fatty acids, and whole grain, high fiber carbohydrates, in moderation, are the basis of a healthy PCOS meal plan. To prevent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and resulting hunger, proteins and healthy fats should be included in meals.
